Frequently Asked Questions for Quick Fields - Custom Fields presentation and on the spot editing module for Joomla!

This article describes how to use, configure or solve common problems, regarding Quick Fields.

General Questions

Quick Fields lets you show a selection of user Custom Fields in a module, so that your logged-in users can edit their own values on the spot, without going to their profile page. You can show as many fields as you wish, and use as many modules as you need. It can also email you when users change specific fields.

There are no limits regarding how to use the extension. You may install it on unlimited domains, and use it completely for free.

No. Quick Fields is a Joomla! extension and can only be used within the Joomla! CMS.

Quick Fields 1.1.0 and newer requires Joomla 5 or Joomla 6, and PHP 8.1 or newer.

Joomla 3 and 4 have reached their end of life, and we strongly recommend updating your website. If you can't update yet, please contact us.

Quick Fields shows Joomla user fields, the ones you create in Users > Fields. All field types are supported, including subforms. Each logged-in user always sees and edits their own values.

Fields from other parts of your website, such as articles or contacts, can't be selected, since they don't belong to the user. Since version 1.1.0, Quick Fields no longer supports EasyProfile fields.

Yes. All texts are in standard Joomla language files. You can translate or change them using System > Manage > Language Overrides, so your changes survive updates. The texts you write in the module options, like the Save Button Text, can be written directly in your language.

Installation & Configuration

To install Quick Fields, you follow the usual steps, as with installing any other Joomla! extension.

Navigate to System > Install > Extensions, and under the tab "Upload Package File", drop the zip file you downloaded from Mavxr.com, or browse for it.

Wait until the package file gets installed and you should see a completion message. You are ready to go. Future updates appear in Joomla's update manager.

Go to Content > Site Modules, click New and choose Quick Fields. Then:

  1. In Fields, select the user fields you want to show.
  2. Select a template position and the menu items it will show up in.
  3. Publish it!

The module is only visible to logged-in users. Make sure your users are allowed to edit custom field values. See "Fields are shown, but are disabled!" under Common Problems.

Quick Fields is a presentation module. You create your fields in Joomla, and then present them anywhere you wish with Quick Fields. To create user fields, navigate to Users > Fields in your Joomla administrator. Their options (required, default value, list options, access level and more) apply in Quick Fields too.

In the module's Notifications tab, enable notifications, write one or more email addresses separated by semicolons, and select the Monitored Fields. Only fields that are also shown in the module can change through it.

In the subject and message body, you can write %user% for the user's name, and %fields% for a table with each changed field, its previous and current value, and the date of the change. An email is only sent when the value of a monitored field actually changes.

Yes. Quick Fields uses Joomla's own form fields, so it follows your template's style. For bigger changes, you can create a template override of mod_quick_fields/default.php, or an alternative layout that you select in the module's Advanced tab.

Your form must include the module id and the security token, otherwise saving fails:

<input type="hidden" name="quickfields_module" value="<?php echo (int) $module->id; ?>">
<?php echo \Joomla\CMS\HTML\HTMLHelper::_('form.token'); ?>

If you have an override from a version before 1.1.0, add these two lines inside its form.

Common Problems

First, make sure you are logged in. Quick Fields shows each user their own fields, so it is not visible to guests. Then check that the module:

  1. has a template position
  2. is assigned to the current menu item
  3. is published, and has at least one field selected

A field is also hidden when it is unpublished, when its access level (or its field group's) doesn't include the user, or when its Show On option is set to Administrator.

Most commonly, the page was open for too long and the session expired. Reload the page and try again.

If it happens every time, check for a template override from a version before 1.1.0 (see "Can I change how the module looks?"), or a page caching extension that caches pages for logged-in users. Exclude the pages that show the module from caching.

This is a matter of Permissions. Users can only change a field if their user group has the Edit Custom Field Value permission, and a default Joomla installation does not give it to Registered users.

You can set it for all user fields in Users > Manage > Options, in the Permissions tab, or for a specific field in the Permissions tab of that field, at Users > Fields. This is Joomla's own permission, which also applies to the user profile form.

Quick Fields filters what users submit, exactly like the user profile form does, using the Text Filters in System > Global Configuration. By default, Registered users can't save HTML. If you want to allow it, adjust the filter for the relevant user group, or the Filter option of the field.

The value doesn't pass the field's validation. For example, a required field was left empty, or the value is not one of the field's options. Check the field's options in Users > Fields.

Check that notifications are enabled, that Notification Email contains valid addresses, and that the monitored fields are also selected in Fields. Remember that an email is only sent when a monitored value actually changes.

Then test your Joomla mail settings with System > Global Configuration > Server > Send Test Mail. We strongly suggest using SMTP instead of PHP Mail. If you still can't receive them, please contact us.
